Jay Fuhrer, Rudy Garcia, Steve Tucker, George Whitten, Erin Nissen, and more great practitioners of soil health in the Western U.S. are convening with the Soil and Water Conservation Society - Colorado Chapter in Alamosa on November 14, 2018.
Jay Fuhrer is a North Dakota-based soil health expert with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) who has worked around the world on ,soil health implementation and training, offering practical insights and pragmatic approaches in his talks. Rudy Garcia, also with NRCS, works around the Southwestern US, specializing in soil health management for arid lands. Steve Tucker is a western-Nebraska farmer and rancher whose unique use of cover crops and soil management have led to great market opportunities on limited water, beyond what was imaginable prior to implementing soil health principles on his land. George Whitten has integrated soil health principles into his holistic management framework in raising beef cattle, both on private and public lands, and has seen substantial gains in long-term productivity and resilience in his land as a consequence. Erin Nissen has actively engaged soil health principles, integrating livestock and forage diversity into cash crop rotations, all the while mindful of irrigation water use. And on this day you'll hear accounts from even more Westerners making strides towards healthier soils.
At the workshop & field tour, these folks will share their wisdom and experience around implementing soil health principles to regenerate lands under the tough conditions of the West. Expect the focus of this day to be on the role of water use in the effort to sustain working lands, and expect the conversation to be lively! The morning session will be held at the Adams State University Student Union Building, with lunch during the field tour portion ,in the afternoon.
